China ready to strengthen ties with Portugal: senior official

China is willing to increase trade and economic co-operation with Portugal in a bid to raise the strategic partnership between the two nations to a new and higher level, said a senior official of the Communist Party of China.

Guo Jinlong, a member of China’s main policy-making committee, the Politburo, made the remarks during a three-day visit to the European nation this week, Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported. Mr Guo met several senior figures within the Portuguese Republic, including the President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“China attaches great importance to the development of ties with Portugal and is willing to further strengthen mutual political trust… with Portugal,” Mr Guo was quoted saying. He added that he saw potential for further growth in the fields of tourism and maritime co-operation.

The Portuguese President was quoted saying the country would continue its efforts to promote closer ties between Europe and China.
