China Three Gorges eyes more projects in Brazil

Chinese state-owned power firm China Threes Gorges Corp is interested in wind and solar projects in Brazil besides hydroelectric dams, said this week Li Yinsheng, head of its Brazilian operation.

“In these first years our focus has been on hydroelectric power,” Mr Li told news agency Reuters. “We’ve been looking at [non-hydro] renewables more seriously recently,” he added.

Regarding projects outside the hydro renewables sector, the executive said possible acquisitions could take place in the next six months to one year.

Since opening a subsidiary in Brazil in 2013, the Chinese firm has spent 15 billion reais (US$4.54 billion) buying four large hydroelectric dams in Brazil, as well as acquiring stakes in two more dams, the report said.

Mr Li noted that the growth in demand for energy in Brazil could justify the investment the company had already made in the market, and the investment it is planning for the coming years.
