China Three Gorges might bid for Brazilian dam

A consortium led by state-owned power firm China Three Gorges Corp (CTG) is preparing a bid to build and operate an 8,000-megawatt power station in Brazil, newspaper China Daily reported this week.

Wang Shaofeng, executive vice president of China Three Gorges International Corp, a subsidiary of CTG, the Brazilian Government launches such a bidding process, the consortium would be a strong contender for a hydroelectric dam on the Tapajos River.

“We have been present in Brazil’s hydropower market for several years. For most of the projects, we participated through capital investment,” he said. “But with our rich experience we can do more in Brazil.”

Last year, CTG won 30-year concession rights to operate two major hydroelectric dams in the South American nation, involving a total investment of US$3.7 billion, the newspaper said. The Brazilian Government said at the time that the Chinese group had become the first foreign firm independently to manage Brazilian dams.
