China to cut import tariffs on certain consumer goods

The Chinese State Council, or cabinet, has approved reductions in tariffs on imported consumer products such as sportswear, household appliances, aquatic products and medicine from July 1, CCTV reports.

The state-run television network says the average tariff on clothes and sportswear will be reduced to 7.1 percent from 15.9 percent, and the average tariff on household appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators will be reduced to 8 percent from 20.5 percent.

CCTV quotes Premier Li Keqiang as saying the purpose of the reductions is to give consumers more choices.
