China to train, equip São Tomé e Príncipe armed forces

The defence chief of staff of São Tomé e Príncipe, Gen. Horácio Sousa, has said China will give his forces training and equipment, STP-Press reports.

The São Tomé e Príncipe state-run news agency quotes Gen. Sousa as saying China will provide several African countries, including São Tomé e Príncipe, with logistic support, training and help with military infrastructure to prepare them to counter terrorism and piracy.

The report quotes a senior Chinese defence official, Song Yanchao, as saying the aim of his government is to help maintain peace in Africa.

Gen. Sousa and Mr Song were speaking in the light of the deliberations of a Sino-African conference on defence and security, held in Beijing, which ended last week.
