China Unicom undersea cable links Africa, South America

A consortium led by China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd (China Unicom) has finished laying the first undersea fibre-optic cable between Africa and South America, Yicai Global reports.

The Chinese financial news website quotes a written statement issued by China Unicom as saying the South Atlantic Inter Link consortium laid the 6,000 km cable between Kribi in Cameroon and Fortaleza in Brazil.

China Unicom says the cable has a designed capacity of 32 terabits per second.

China Unicom and Huawei Marine Networks Co. Ltd of China, and Camtel of Cameroon struck the deal to lay the cable in June last year, Yicai Global said.
