China urges international support for Guiné-Bissau elections

A Chinese diplomat has called last week for international technical, financial and logistical support for elections to the legislature in Guiné-Bissau, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative at the United Nations Wu Haitao as telling a UN Security Council meeting: “We hope that parties in Guiné-Bissau will work together to ensure that elections are held on schedule in a smooth manner.”

The diplomat said his country would work with others to promote dialogue among the political parties in Guiné-Bissau, to help ensure stability there, and to develop the country along with the rest of West Africa.

The report says elections to the Guiné-Bissau legislature were due to have been held on November 18, but were postponed because of technical difficulties.

President José Mário Vaz decreed last week that the elections would be held next March 10, Xinhua says.
