China’s exports surge 15.5pct last month as demand for imports accelerates

Chinese exports grew by 15.5 percent in year-on-year terms last month, further accelerating from April’s 14.3-percent increase, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The Government-owned news agency cited the latest data from the Chinese General Administration of Customs.

Imports grew by 22.1 percent in year-on-year terms last month, accelerating from April’s 18.6-percent increase.

To the end of last month, total exports were 5.88 trillion yuan (US$865.52 billion), an increase of 14.8 percent compared to first five months of last year. Imports have also grown significantly so far this year. Imports were valued at 4.88 trillion yuan for the first five months of this year, a 26.5-percent increase over the same period last year, Xinhua says.
