China’s Xi wants Macao link to Portuguese-speaking Countries

China’s President Xi Jinping says Macao should boost its role as a service platform for business cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, government-owned broadcaster CGTN reports.

Mr Xi made the comments on Monday at a meeting with delegations from China’s two Special Administrative Regions (SARs), Macao and Hong Kong. The meeting was held to mark the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up.

The Chinese president also urged Macao to enhance its position as a world-class tourism and leisure destination.

CGTN said Mr Xi wanted both Hong Kong and Macao to seize the opportunities arising from the Belt and Road, an infrastructure initiative that Portugal and Cabo Verde say they would like to join.

Mr Xi also said the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area plan will create “significant opportunities” for both SARs.
