Guinea-Bissau government officials and Chinese Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau Jin Hongjun attended the ceremonial breaking of ground for the second phase of the Chinese-backed Alto do Bandim fishing port, Lusa reports.
The Portuguese news agency says the work is estimated to cost €22 million (about US$24.9 million) and take about two years.
The report says the second phase includes the installation of floating docks 50 metres long, and construction of a new breakwater, an administration and dealing building, an access road, drains and sewers.
It quotes Mr Jin as saying China wishes to teach people how to fish rather than give them fish.
China is indispensable to the drive to develop Guinea-Bissau, Lusa quotes Guinea-Bissau Prime Minister Aristides Gomes as saying.
