Chinese contractor starts building Mozambican waterworks

China Henan International Corp. Group Co. Ltd has broken ground for the construction of a US$35 million water treatment plant in Sábié, near Maputo, Jornal Notícias reports.

The Mozambican newspaper says the contractor is due to complete the waterworks in 2020.

The report quotes Mozambican Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources João Osvaldo Machatine as saying at the groundbreaking ceremony that the plant is an important part of a scheme to supply Maputo with water from the Corumana reservoir.

The scheme will increase the annual supply of water to the city to 1.24 billion cubic meters in 2025 from 720 million cubic metres now, and give access to the supply to 650,000 more people than at present, Jornal Notícias says.
