Chinese January imports grow 30.2 pct to 1.19 trln yuan

Official figures indicate that the value in yuan of Chinese merchandise imports rose to 1.19 trillion yuan (US$118.02 billion) last month, 30.2 percent more than a year earlier, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese state-run news agency, citing figures given by the Chinese General Administration of Customs, says the value in yuan of merchandise exports rose by 6 percent to 1.32 trillion yuan.

Exports of machinery, electronics and household appliances grew, but exports of steel shrank.

The report says the Chinese trade surplus last month was135.8 billion yuan, 59.7 percent less than a year earlier.

The European Union, the United States, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations bloc were the main trading partners of China last month, Xinhua says.
