Chinese oil company mulls building refinery in Angola

The Angolan government has announced that Great United Petroleum Holding Co. Ltd of China has expressed interest in building Angola’s second oil refinery.

The government issued a written statement saying Great United Petroleum President Gong Jialong said so in a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço.

Mr Gong also expressed interest in setting up a fertiliser factory in Angola, the government says.

Jornal de Angola quotes Great United Petroleum Vice-chairman David Zhao as saying Mr Lourenço voiced his support for the Great United Petroleum investment plan.

The Angolan newspaper says that although Angola is the second-biggest producer of oil in Africa, it has only one refinery, with insufficient capacity to meet domestic demand.

That means almost all Angolan oil is exported as crude to be refined elsewhere, much of it in China, Jornal de Angola says.
