Chinese-run gold mine in Angola due to start work in October

The administrator of the Angolan state-owned mining concessionaire, Ferrangol, expects Tiandai Mining of China to start digging for gold at a mine in northwestern Angola in October, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes the administrator, Kayaya Cahala, as telling a conference in Luanda that the mine, in Nambuangongo in the province of Bengo, is thought to contain about 1.5 million tonnes of gold.

Mr Cahala said he expected four gold mines to start working in Angola this year, together producing gold at the rate of 700 kg a year or faster.

The first to open, before July, should be the Chipindo mine in the southwestern province of Huíla, where testing of the first gold extracted has begun, Lusa quotes Mr Cahala as saying.
