Chinese to explore possibility of sea urchin farming in Portugal

Chinese scientists will study how to culture sea urchins in Portugal, with a view to farming them for their roe, Correio da Manhã reports.

The Portuguese newspaper says the study will be one of the consequences of a Sino-Portuguese co-operation programme signed in China by Portuguese Minister of the Sea Ana Paula Vitorino and her Chinese counterpart.

The report says the Chinese scientists will make use of the aquaculture station of the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere in Olhão in southern Portugal.

The roe of sea urchins is considered a delicacy in Asia, Correio da Manhã says.
