Chinese tourists spend over US$10,000 per head in Brazil so far in August

Chinese tourists have so far spent on average 72,145 yuan (US$10,830) per head during trips to Brazil this month, Chinese state-run newspaper People’s Daily reported this week. The news outlet didn’t give a figure for the total number of Chinese visitors to Brazil during August up to the date of the report.

Nonetheless it said – citing figures from Chinese travel website Ctrip – that the average amount spent per Chinese visitor during the early part of August was about 35 percent higher than the average spend of those Chinese tourists that visited the country between January and July.

The report added that Ctrip suggested the hike in average spend was due to the Olympic Games held in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro this month. The event had spurred an increase in prices for flights and hotels, Ctrip said.

The number of Chinese people booking tours to South American nations – including Brazil and Argentina – has surged 150 percent year-on-year so far this year, the report noted.
