Chinese, US partners to build power station in Mozambique

State-owned China Machinery Engineering Corp. and General Electric Co. of the United States have joined forces to back the building of a coal-fired power station in the Mozambican province of Tete, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes a written statement issued by the developer, Ncondezi Energy Ltd, as saying it has informed the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy about its schedule and will come up with the money for the power station this month, with a view to opening it in 2023.

The report says Ncondezi Energy will dig its own coal mine to fuel the power station.

The power station will have a capacity of 300MW to begin with, and 1,800MW later on, enough for electricity to be exported to South Africa and Zimbabwe, Lusa says.
