COFCO imports of Mato Grosso soybeans to reach 7.2 bln tonnes

Chinese commodities trader COFCO International Ltd means to nearly double the annual amount of soybeans it imports from the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso over the next five years, Reuters reports.

The news agency quotes the state government as saying COFCO International intends to increase the amount from 7.2 million tonnes a year from 4 million tonnes.

The report says the announcement follows a visit to China by Mato Grosso Governor Pedro Taques.

Mr Taques had meetings in China with representatives of several Chinese companies that have investments in Brazil, including COFCO International.

The state government also disclosed that Chinese investors and Brazilian companies are discussing the construction of a 1.5 billion reais (US$459 million) grain storage complex in Mato Grosso, Reuters says.
