Deal to promote payment via Alipay in Portuguese shops

Portuguese bank Millennium BCP and Chinese electronic payment service Alipay have struck a deal to promote the use of Alipay in shops in Portugal, for the convenience of Chinese tourists there, the bank says.

Millennium BCP says in a written statement that the deal may mean more business for Portuguese shopkeepers, as Chinese dislike travelling abroad with large amounts of cash.

The bank says almost 257,000 Chinese visited Portugal last year.

The deal may eventually lead to other forms of collaboration in online payments and e-commerce, Millennium BCP says.
