EC thinks Portuguese GDP will grow by 1.7 pct in 2019, 2020

The European Commission has forecast that Portuguese gross domestic product will expand at an annual rate of 1.7 percent this year and next.

An EC publication, the European Economic Forecast Spring 2019, says the Portuguese economy may keep growing moderately as the strength of private consumption and investment offsets the weakness of net exports.

The publication released this week forecasts that this year private consumption will increase by 2.3 percent and gross investment will increase by 4.6 percent.

It forecasts that the unemployment rate will keeping falling, to 6.2 percent this year from 7 percent last year, and to 5.7 percent next year.

Gross public debt as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to keep falling, to 119.5 percent this year from 121.5 percent last year, and to 116.6 percent next year, the European Economic Forecast Spring 2019 says.
