First shipment of Portuguese pork leaves for China today

Portugal begins today exporting to China pork produced by three slaughterhouses, Lusa reports. The Portuguese news agency says the first shipment is of 10 containers of meat.

The report says Portuguese Agriculture Minister Capoulas Santos and Chinese Ambassador to Portugal Cai Run were due to attend the dispatch of the shipment.

It quotes Portuguese Federation of Poultry Associations Director Nuno Correia as saying the annual value of such exports may reach €100 million (about US$114.39 million) to begin with, and eventually reach double that amount.

A showroom for Portuguese wine, fruit and pork will be built in the southern Chinese province of Hunan this year, Lusa quotes Mr Correia as saying.
