H1 Chinese investment in Brazil nearly triples

Data compiled by the Brazilian Planning Ministry indicate that the value of Chinese investment in Brazil grew to US$1.54 billion in the first half of this year from US$589 million a year earlier, Reuters reports.

But the news agency quotes Vice-minister of Planning for International Affairs Jorge Arbache as saying the value this year is unlikely to turn out to be as great as last year, when Chinese invested US$20.9 billion in Brazil.

Mr Arbache said Chinese companies appeared to be waiting until after the Brazilian presidential election in October next year before deciding whether to invest.

Big Chinese investments in Brazil are mainly in redeveloping brownfield industrial sites and in building infrastructure, but recently Chinese investors have been putting more money into developing greenfield sites for manufacturing and services, Reuters quotes the vice-minister as saying.
