Half Brazilian iron ore exports so far in 2019 go to China

Kallanish Energy reckons 52 percent of Brazilian exports of iron ore in the first two months of this year went to China, the Hellenic Shipping News reports.

The newspaper quotes the collector of information about commodity markets as saying 7.3 percent went to Malaysia and 5.6 percent went to Japan, and that no other country took a bigger share.

Official data from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services indicate that Brazil exported 28.9 million tonnes of iron ore last month, 21.6 percent more than a year earlier.

Kallanish says the decision in January by Vale SA, the biggest miner of iron ore in Brazil, to cut its output has yet to curb shipments abroad of Brazilian iron ore.

The decision follows the rupture of a dam at Vale’s Córrego do Feijão mine which killed at least 186 people in Brumadinho, the Hellenic Shipping News says.
