Huawei model to be first 5G phone sold in Portugal

Portuguese wireless telecommunications company NOS SGPS SA has said it will begin offering in Portugal a fifth-generation mobile phone made by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd of China, Lusa reports.

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G model will go on sale tomorrow in shops and on the NOS website, becoming the first 5G phone in the Portuguese market, the Portuguese news agency quotes a written statement issued by NOS as saying.

Separately, O Observador reports that says the phone will cost €1,100 (US$1,220).

The launch is a step toward increasing the availability of 5G wireless telecommunications, the Portuguese newspaper quotes an NOS executive as a saying.

The European Union has called for each of its members to make 5G telecommunications available in at least one city next year and to keep expanding 5G networks thereafter, Lusa reports.
