Huawei tries again to penetrate Brazilian smartphone market

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd of China will launch two high-end smartphones in Brazil in a second effort to penetrate the fourth-largest market for smartphones in the world, Reuters reports.

The news agency says that on May 17 Huawei will begin selling its P30 Pro and P30 Lite phones in shops belonging to Brazilian chains such as Magazine Luiza, Via Varejo, B2W and Fast Shop, for access to the Telefonica Brasil wireless network.

The report says Huawei first tried to penetrate the Brazilian market for smartphones in 2014, but gave up because demand was weak.

It quotes Huawei Vice-president of Marketing for the Americas Ketrina Dunagan as saying: “We are in a very different market share position than we were five years ago, and we’re seeing tremendous brand momentum.”

Huawei will begin by importing from China the smartphones it sells in Brazil, but may later make them in Brazil if demand is sufficient, Reuters says.
