IMF’s tips Mozambique to be star economy in lusophone Africa

The International Monetary Fund says it expects the economy of Mozambique to expand by 5.5 percent next year, the fastest rate of growth it expects anywhere in Portuguese-speaking Africa.

The IMF’s latest report on the economic outlook for sub-Saharan Africa forecasts that the Mozambican economy will grow by 4.5 percent this year.

The fund forecasts that Guinea-Bissau’’s economy will grow by 4.8 percent this year and 5 percent next year, and that Cape Verde’’s will grow by 3.6 percent this year and 4 percent next year.

It forecasts that the economy of Angola will stagnate this year but expand by 1.5 percent next year.

The sub-Saharan African economy as a whole will grow by 1.4 percent this year, expanding at the slowest rate for over 20 years, and grow by 2.9 percent next year, the IMF predicts.
