IPIM mulls new fair in Macao focused on Portuguese-speaking countries

The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) is studying the possibility of launching a new business fair in Macao specifically focused on the relations between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, IPIM’s Executive Director Glória Batalha Ung told local newspaper Jornal Tribuna de Macau.

“As Macao has taken on the role of acting as a services and products platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, we think it makes sense to create another event, more prominent, that may be able to attract more people,” Ms Ung said in an interview published on Monday.

According to Ms Ung, IPIM currently organises four annual fairs in Macau. Portuguese-speaking Countries are invited to take part in all of them, she said, but it is in the Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) – usually held in October – that “participation is more prominent”.

“[It is our idea] to organise another fair, maybe at another time of the year, outside MIF,” she said.

This year, Ms Ung explained, the Portuguese-speaking Countries Pavilion in MIF will not only promote products from these nations, but also their services. The move, she added, might serve as a test to assess whether there are sufficient conditions “to expand the Portuguese-speaking Countries’ participation”.
