Lusophone central bankers, financiers visit southern China

The Monetary Authority of Macao says it arranged for representatives of central banks and financial institutions in the Portuguese-speaking world to visit the southern Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai this week.

The authority issued a written statement saying the 23 lusophone visitors included governors, deputy governors or other representatives of the central banks of Portugal, Mozambique, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola, Timor-Leste and Cabo Verde.

The statement quotes an official of the monetary authority, Vong Lap Fong, as saying that in arranging the visit, the authority was helping Macao serve as a place where China and the Portuguese-speaking world can conduct business.

Mr Vong said the visit had been meant to inform financial institutions and central banks in the Portuguese-speaking world about the finance industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the prospects for its development.

The visitors learned about the importance of Macao to the surrounding area, the report quoted Governor Carlos da Silva Costa of the Portuguese central bank as saying.

The visitors will attend in Macao tomorrow a Monetary Authority of Macao seminar on co-operation between their institutions and equivalent institutions in China, the authority says.
