Macao handles RMB13.89 bln in settlements for lusophone world since 2015

Payments worth RMB13.89 billion (US$2 billion) have been settled in renminbi in Macao on behalf of banks in Portuguese-speaking countries since last year, the Macao Daily News reports.

The newspaper quotes Bank of China Macau Branch Deputy General Manager Chan Hio Peng. He told a seminar his branch has been actively involved in business between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries in the past two years, including giving letters of credit and making loans in renminbi.

BoC Macau is the only bank authorised to do clearing in renminbi and to do it for Portuguese-speaking countries from Macao.
