Macau company to develop integrated leisure project in Portugal

Gaming services company Macau Legend Development plans to develop an integrated leisure, tourism and entertainment project in Portugal, the firm said.

The Macau-based company signed on Thursday, in Macao, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Setúbal Municipality in Portugal regarding that proposal.

“The first phase of this project will include a hotel, a shopping area, a residential area, a marina, a parking lot, a new multi-sport pavilion and a gaming arcade with slot machines,” the company said in a press release.

The project is aimed at promoting “both the growth of tourism and the local economy of Setúbal,” Macau Legend Development added.

It also aims “to better connect” that Portuguese city to the neighbouring area of Tróia, a holiday destination 15 minutes away from Setúbal by passenger and car ferries, and where there is a casino. The existing Tróia Casino and Concession will be transferred to a joint venture company to be formed by Macau Legend Development with three companies in Portugal.

Maria das Dores Meira, Mayor of Setúbal, said – as quoted in the press release – “the signing of the MoU represents an important step” toward “promoting tourism and investment to Setúbal and to increase employment opportunities”. She added the project would also “help attract Chinese and other Asian tourists”.

David Chow, co-chairman of Macau Legend Development, said the company would “continue to build on Macao’s unique position” and “further showcase the importance of Macao’s role on the Sino-Luso platform”.

Macau Legend Development is also developing a 250-million euros (US$279.7-million) casino resort in Cape Verde.
