Mainland to invest US$289 billion in tourism sector by 2020

China will invest 2 trillion yuan (US$289 billion) in tourism between now and 2020, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reports.

The National Development and Reform Commission announced the details in a plan to build infrastructure and create incentives to attract private investment in tourism, Lusa reports.

If the plan is successful, the tourism sector will contribute more than 10 percent of GDP and provide employment for about 50 million people.

China’s main economic planning body expects purchases of tourism services will reach about 7 trillion yuan annually by 2020.
