Meat industry says Brazil the main source of Chinese pork imports

Brazilian Association of Animal Protein Vice-President Ricardo Santin has said Brazil is now the main supplier of Chinese imports of pork, Brazilian news media report.

Separately, the Global Times, a Chinese newspaper, reported last week that official figures indicate Brazil exported 39,175 tonnes of pork to China in the first quarter of this year, 151.6 percent more than a year earlier.

The reports quote Mr Santin as saying the amount of pork Brazil exported to China grew to 13,600 tonnes in March, nearly 178 percent more than a year earlier.

“Given the trade disputes between China and the United States, the numbers are expected to grow further, gradually regaining previous levels of shipment,” Mr Santin is quoted as saying.

China has imposed a tariff of 25 percent on imports of pork from the United States, the reports say.

Mr Santin had said previously that Brazil was “well prepared to meet the Chinese demand for food products”, adding that his association planned to strengthen its relationship with China.
