Brazilian Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi has said China may permit more imports of poultry and pork from Brazil after Chinese inspectors checked meatpacking plants there last month, Reuters reports.
The news agency quotes Mr Maggi as saying: “We are expecting that by the end of the year China is likely to OK something in this area.”
He said 79 Brazilian meatpacking plants had asked for permission to export to China, and that if all obtained permission, it would double the number of plants allowed to export poultry and pork to China.
The minister said Brazil was prepared for the eventuality of China removing tariffs on soybeans it imports from the United States.
One consequence of the US-China trade war is that China bought four-fifths of the soybeans Brazil has exported so far this year, and another is that the price premium commanded in Chicago by Brazilian soybeans has never been greater, Reuters says.
