Most foreigners given Portuguese golden visas are Chinese

Official data indicate that of the 6,498 foreigners given permission to live in Portugal because they invest in the country, 3,963 are Chinese, Reuters reports.

The news agency, citing figures given by the Portuguese Interior Ministry, says 581 are Brazilians, 259 South Africans, 236 Turks and 227 Russians.

The report says that altogether they have invested €3.97 billion (US$4.7 billion) in Portugal.

Since 2012 the golden visa scheme has allowed foreigners from outside the European Union to live in Portugal if they buy real estate there worth at least €500,000, bring in at least €1 million of capital or create at least 10 jobs in the country.
