Mozambican airport among largest China-aided African projects

Maputo International Airport, serving Mozambique’s capital, and a multi-use stadium in that country  are among the largest African development projects to have received Chinese aid, said Chinese official newspaper People’s Daily last week.

“As the largest airport in Mozambique, Maputo Airport was upgraded with concessionary loans from the Chinese Government,” the newspaper said. Portuguese news agency Lusa reported the project cost in total US$75 million, with the international terminal completed in 2010 and the domestic terminal in 2012.

The Zimpeto Stadium – which has capacity to host 42,000 people –was completed with funds from the Chinese Government in April 2011, People’s Daily added.

The newspaper compiled a list of major African projects in receipt of Chinese aid. It included: the Tanzania-Zambia railway that links the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania with the town of Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia’s Central Province; and a national theatre in Senegal.

Last week China’s President Xi Jinping pledged to provide US$60 billion to support the development of African countries.
