Mozambique consumer inflation up nearly 17.3 pct in April

Consumer inflation in Mozambique rose by approximately 17.3 percent year-on-year in April, the country’s National Statistics Institute announced on Wednesday.

The rise was driven mainly by higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. They increased 30.1 percent year-on-year in April, the bureau said.

In March, Mozambique’s consumer inflation had registered an annual increase of approximately 13.6 percent, according to the nation’s statistics office.

Mozambique’s central bank last month raised its benchmark interest rates in a fresh bid to curb inflation. The Bank of Mozambique announced in April its standing lending facility rate was increasing by 200 basis points to 12.75 percent, while its benchmark interest rate for deposits was increased by 150 basis points to 5.75 percent.
