Mozambique seeks US$700 mln to build dam

Mozambique is seeking US$700 million to build a dam in its southern province of Gaza. It is an attempt to tackle water shortages, Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday. The area has recently experienced a drought lasting several months.

Raimundo Matule, Director for Planning and International Co-operation at Mozambique’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety, said on Monday the proposed dam near the town of Mapai could provide irrigation to more than 150,000 hectares of farmland. The dam could also be used for power generation, he added.

“This is our perspective, and we are… looking for finance for the Mapai dam,” he noted.

Gaza is one of several provinces in the African nation to be hit by drought recently. Nationally more than 200,000 people and 10,000 hectares of farmland, have been affected Xinhua reported.
