Mozambique’s Minister for Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, has said that the country’s Government is in negotiations with several potential partners – in particular Chinese firms – to revamp a key railway link.
The project has a budget of US$400 million, Mr Mesquita said, quoted by local newspaper Notícias.
The railway to be renovated is 317-kilometres long and links the port city of Beira to Machipanda, near the border with Zimbabwe.
Mr Mesquita stated that the Government was considering using a ‘BOT’ (build-operate-transfer) model for the renovation contract.
He added that the upgrade to the Beira-Machipanda railway link was urgently needed to cope with increasing demand for rail transport services in Mozambique.
