Over 100,000 Chinese to visit Brazil for Summer Olympics

More than 100,000 Chinese nationals are expected to visit Brazil for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro this summer, said the organisers in a statement, citing estimates from the World Tourism Organization.

The Games’ organisers also announced a new partnership with Chinese microblogging service provider Sina Weibo to open an official social media platform.

“We are excited to work with Sina Weibo,” said Benjamin Paz, Rio 2016’s digital engagement manager. “This will extend Rio 2016’s social media reach significantly… We are looking forward to reaching so many people with the magic of the Olympic Games.”

Sina Weibo now has more than 600 million subscribers, accounting for 30 percent of Internet users in China, according to the statement.

The Brazilian Government announced in a statement last week that “Visit Brazil”, the official Brazilian tourism website, had also opened an official platform on Sina Weibo.
