Pernambuco branch of Confucius Institute now five years old

The Confucius Institute at the University of Pernambuco, a centre for learning about the Chinese language and Chinese culture in northeastern Brazil, has celebrated the fifth anniversary of its foundation, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency says the University of Pernambuco and the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing jointly established the Pernambuco branch of the Confucius Institute.

The report quotes Chinese Consul-General in Recife Yan Yuqing as saying at the celebration of the anniversary that the Pernambuco branch of the Confucius Institute is a “bridge of friendship” between China and Brazil.

The Pernambuco branch is alone among the 10 or so branches in Brazil in having been classified by the governing body of the Confucius Institute as a model Confucius Institute, Xinhua says.
