Portugal to open Guangzhou consulate

Portugal will open a consulate in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou early next year, TSF has reported.

The Portuguese radio station quoted former Portuguese Ambassador to China Jorge Torres Pereira as saying Portugal had been meaning for a long time to open a consulate in Guangzhou.

The report said the Portuguese government had decided in 2016 to open a consulate there, but had only recently received Chinese government permission to do so.

It quoted the newly appointed Portuguese Consul-General in Guangzhou, André Sobral Cordeiro, as saying the new consulate would make contact between Portuguese and Chinese companies easier, so opening up new markets for Portugal.

Portugal already has consulates in Beijing and Shanghai, TSF noted.
