Portugal trade deficit shrinks 13.6 pct in 3Q

Portugal’s trade deficit decreased in the third quarter of the year to 2.6 billion euros (US$2.8 billion), down 13.6 percent from the previous year, official figures showed.

Data from Statistics Portugal, quoted this week by Portuguese news agency Lusa, indicated the value of the European country’s exports increased by 3.2 percent year-on-year between June and September. The value of Portuguese imports fell 0.3 percent in the third quarter 2015, compared to the same period last year.

In the first nine months of this year, the value of Portuguese exports climbed 4.9 percent year-on-year, the statistics bureau said. Between January and September, the value of Portugal’s imports grew 2.8 percent from the same period last year.

The media outlet also reported that the value of Portuguese exports to Angola fell 28.7 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of the year to 1.59 billion euros. The value of Portuguese imports from the African nation also decreased by 21.2 percent from the previous year, to 942 million euros.

The value of Portugal’s exports to Mozambique, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau increased year-on-year in the Jan-Sept period, according to Lusa.
