Portuguese carmakers reportedly welcome Chinese tariff cut

An official of the Portuguese automobile industry association has said the reduction in the Chinese tariff on imported vehicles may increase exports of Portuguese-made cars to China, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency cites a report on the Dinheiro Vivo website as quoting the official, Helder Pedro, as saying: “Reducing barriers to car trade could lead to an increase in exports in the next few months.”

The news agency says the Chinese Ministry of Finance announced yesterday that the Chinese tariff on imported cars and car parts would be reduced in July to 15 percent from 25 percent.

Portuguese exports of motor vehicles and associated materials to China were worth €288 million (US$338.69 million) last year, or 34.2 percent of the value of all Portuguese exports to China, Lusa says.
