Portuguese-Chinese consortium wins rail, port contract in Mozambique

A Portuguese-Chinese consortium has been awarded a contract to build a railway in Mozambique between the inland mining centre of Moatize and the coastal city of Macuse, Portuguese newspaper Expresso reports.

The Mota-Engil Group from Porto and Mainland Chinese firm China National Complete Engineering Corporation, also known as CCEC, will also create a deep-water harbour and infrastructure for a total of US$2.3 billion, the report says.

The owner of the concession to the harbour and railway, Thai Mocambique Logistica, SA, says the 500-kilometre long railway should start operating in 2021, the company’s chief executive José Pires da Fonseca, was quoted as saying.
