Portuguese moneychanger ready to tap Chinese tourists

Portuguese moneychanger Unicâmbio SA and SIX Payment Services Ltd of Switzerland have done a deal that will give Unicâmbio access to the electronic payments market, O Jornal Económico reports.

The Portuguese newspaper, citing a written statement issued by Unicâmbio, says the company will install point-of-sale terminals that will accept electronic payments, including payments made through the Chinese Alipay system.

The report quotes Unicâmbio Director Paulo Jerónimo as saying the arrangement will allow Portuguese merchants to take payments from the Chinese tourists, whom he called a “huge and underserved” source of money.

Almost 257,000 Chinese visited Portugal in 2017 and together spent about  €130 million (some US$145.4 million) there, the report says.

Unicâmbio has a stake in Angolan moneychanger Unitransfer SA, O Jornal Económico says.
