President hopes Sino-Timor-Leste relationship will develop

Timor-Leste President Francisco Guterres Lú Olo has said his country attaches great importance to its friendship and pragmatic co-operation with China, and looks forward to the relationship developing, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes Mr Lú Olo as saying so when newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste Xiao Jianguo presented his credentials.

The report quotes Mr Lú Olo as thanking China for giving valuable help in bringing about the independence and development of Timor-Leste, and as calling for the development of the Sino-Timor-Leste relationship.

Mr Xiao remarked that China was the first country to recognise the independence of Timor-Leste 16 years ago, and to establish diplomatic relations with the former colony of Portugal.

Political trust and mutually beneficial co-operation between China and Timor-Leste have been increasing, Xinhua quotes the ambassador as saying.
