Shanghai port operator keen to help run Portuguese ports

The Portuguese government says the operator of the port of Shanghai is interested in co-operating with Portuguese institutions in running ports in Portugal, notably the container port at Sines.

The government issued a written statement saying Portuguese Minister of the Sea Ana Paula Vitorino and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. Ltd President Yan Jun met in China and discussed the potential for co-operation between the Shanghai port operator and Portuguese institutions.

The statement says representatives of the Shanghai port operator that visited the Port of Sines recently are excited about the prospects for a new container terminal there.

While in China, Ms Vitorino also met representatives of COSCO Shipping Lines, which is interested in increasing its presence in Portugal, the Portuguese government says.
