A new satellite jointly developed by the China Academy of Space Technology and the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research will monitor deforestation, fires and the expansion of farms and urban areas in the Amazon river basin, The Rio Times reports.
The newspaper says the functions of the new satellite were announced at the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Sino-Brazilian space co-operation programme, held at the Chinese Embassy in Brasilia.
The report says the CBERS-4A satellite, the sixth to be built by the developers, is being tested and is due to be launched from Taiyuan in China next year, The Rio Times says.
