Sino-Portuguese meeting on science, tech held in Lisbon

The China-Portugal Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation has held its ninth meeting in Lisbon, the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology says.

The ministry issued a written statement saying Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Wang Zhigang and Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor jointly convened last week the meeting of over 30 representatives of Chinese or Portuguese institutions.

The statement quotes Mr Wang as saying 16 years of Sino-Portuguese cooperation in science and technology has borne fruit in several fields.

Mr Wang called for better Sino-Portuguese coordination of science and technology strategy and planning, and greater use of Macao as a conduit for cooperative efforts.

Mr Heitor described the commission as a fundamental part of the arrangements for Sino-Portuguese cooperation.

China and Portugal should collaborate more closely and in more fields to facilitate cooperation in science and technology between China and other parts of the world, including the Portuguese-speaking parts, the Chinese official statement quotes Mr Heitor as saying.
