State Grid to invest US$38 bln in Brazilian power industry

An executive of State Grid Corp. of China has said the company will invest 140 billion reais (US$38 billion) in Brazil in the next 5 years, putting money into electricity generation and transmission, Reuters reports.

The news agency quotes a vice-president of the State Grid subsidiary in Brazil, Qu Yang, as telling a conference in São Paulo that his company will invest over 90 billion reais in transmission alone.

Mr Qu said State Grid had looked into solar and wind power generation in Brazil, notably in the south of the country and in the northeastern states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte.

State Grid can use ultra-high voltage transmission technology to connect remote areas where wind and solar power is generated with Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and other centres of population in the Americas, Reuters quotes Mr Qu as saying.
